Indonesia is known as a country rich in spices. But of all types of spices, there are at least 9 major spice groups that are popular in various parts of the world. One of the 9 types of spices is cardamom. Like other spices, cardamom contains essential oils, which are often the main ingredient in aromatic products. Whereas in the perspective of local traditional medicine, cardamom is also often used as a medicinal plant because it can treat coughs, itchy throats, and digestive problems. In the other parts of the world, cardamom is also used by European people as a flavoring ingredient.
In the medical industry, cardamom is researched to find out the chemical content and other compounds that give advantages to our body. Health journals state that there is an essential oil content of up to 7% with the composition of borneol, cineol, camphor, and also terpineol. This substance can be used for the pharmaceutical industry so that cardamom products can be used as extracts medicines that are easier to consume. Research also shows that cardamom contains egg white and calcium oxalate. In the extraction process, the calcium oxalate level will be reduced so that the absorption of nutrients in the body is not disturbed by these compounds. Researchers have tried various extraction methods to find out which method is the most optimal in producing essential oil yields from cardamom extraction.
One of the journals stated that the research procedure for cardamom extraction started by crushing dry cardamom into powder. In a dose of 25 grams, cardamom powder is extracted by adding 300 ml of solvent in the form of N-Hexane and Ethanol to determine which solvent will produce the best yield. The extraction process is carried out using a microwave with a power of 380 watts as a heater. Furthermore, the extract of cardamom is purified by a distillation process. The results of this study indicate that the yield with N-Hexane solvent states that the higher the power in the microwave, the greater the yield. The increase in temperature at the boiling point of the solvent triggers an increase in the extraction yield. Researchers hope that the cardamom extraction process can provide more benefits, both from an economic and non-economic side.
